Important Note: Due to X (Twitter) recent API changes, all Appreciation Engine customers will need a paid developer account with X to access activity data in AE. For more information on their plans, please visit: https://developer.twitter.com/en/products/twitter-api
To start collecting social registrations with Twitter you need to get your Twitter app up and running. Here's how:
Create Your App on Twitter
1. Sign into Twitter at the Twitter Apps site
2. Click on Create New App
3. Fill in your app details
Most sections are pretty straightforward. Don't worry about writing a very detailed description, something like "I am creating an app so that I can monitor fans/customers across social networks," should do fine.
Where it requests a Callback URL, paste the following:https://theappreciationengine.com/TwitterAuthenticator_Controller
Important
If you're on a custom AE Enterprise plan you'll have a custom domain. Make sure to add it in front. E.g. https://sony.theappreciationengine.com/TwitterAuthenticator_Controller
Fill in your details and press the Create your Twitter application button.
4. Successfully registered!
You'll get a message you've been successful and your new app details will appear below.
5. Head over to the Settings tab
Fill in the blank fields you see when you scroll down. We recommend you do this to provide the best user experience.
6. Getting the right permissions
Click on the Permissions tab.
7. Checking the right permissions
Make sure the "Read only" checkbox is selected. This is really important. If you select "Read and Write", your users will see that horrible message that says "Tweet on your behalf". That will set off all sorts of spam bells for your user!
Also check the box at the bottom marked "Request email addresses from users" (optional, but recommended).
Important
If you try to do this before adding your Privacy Policy URL in the Settings tab (see step 5), you will receive an error message and the page will reset itself. If this happens, make sure you go back and re-check the "Read only" box before submitting!
8. Click on the Keys and Access Tokens tab
9. View your Consumer Key/API Key and Consumer Secret/API Secret
